This iconic Australian grass has a particularly wide distribution in Australia and it is found in all our states and territories. It is a hardy, drought-resistant species, which turns a burnt red colour in summer, flowering between December to February.
Thermeda trindra is a tufted perennial which can grow to 1.5m tall and grows in a wide range of soil. Unfortunately due to increased pressure, and the mechanical removal of native pastures it has reduced the presence of this native grass.
This attractive grass can be used in ornamental rockeries, native habitat gardens, in revegetation efforts across Australia, and even as domestic lawn grass. It grows in full sun to part shade and needs little water once established. Its best quality is that it does not suffer from any significant pest or disease problems.

Due to its tolerance of a wide variety of soils, drought and fire, this highly resilient native grass has adapted well to the Australian climate. Kangaroo Grass is ideal for rejuvenation in National Parks and Parklands. Seeds can remain dormant for a period of up to 12 months, with fire or temperatures of 40-45’C may break dormancy.
Kangaroo Grass colours as a green to grey during winter months, drying to an orange-brown in summer. Generally kept mown it is a deep green to green-brown throughout the year. Unlike traditional lawn grasses, Kangaroo Grass needs very little water and is incredibly drought resistant.
Kangaroo Grass is very low maintenance, requiring very little watering and fertiliser. This perennial grass thrives when intermittently grazed, is palatable to livestock, and its low oxide levels make it suitable for horses.
The plant's quick growth and ornamental properties make it perfect for rejuvenating parks and is being readily used in gardens, rockeries and through commercial applications.
